Fellows,

I may neither be paired nor forced to reside here, but, nevertheless, grow restless. 'Tis not physical inactivity I despair of, but the atrophying of magical abilities... Educational reading is all very well, yes, but I lack any sort of decent challenge.

Needless to say, I suspect those of you classed as inmates are frustrated even further.

Therefore, I propose some form of sporting tournament. Inmates choose a speciality, whether it be physical combat, academic prowess, magical skill or other talent. Competition, I believe, is said to be healthy and should assist in teaching constructive uses for one's inherent abilities.

Should my proposal be desirable, I suggest suitable wardens be located who can judge each event's participation for fairness. The Admiral may decide on a suitable prize and disqualification or the deduction of points can provide incentives for good behaviour in general.

Lark and I have been discussing something like this, but -- well, repeated issues, vanishing acts and somebody turning up without legs sort of became a priority.

We were thinking -- something like an obstacle course. Skill, power, survival, and cleverness all had to be used. What do you think of that idea?

I believe you have identified the greatest flaw in your plan... Not all are equal - or, indeed, physically whole. Those given only the talent to excel in one area would not succeed in a test of combined skills.

I believe a differing series of events, each equal in status to the other, would be the fairest compromise.

Well, see, that's why we were planning on this being a team effort. So they had to learn cooperation, use of variety of skills and support of each other!

Which I think many inmates and even some wardens would find valuable.

We just have to keep people from using it as an opportunity to grudgematch and murder each other.

Precisely the task of rules and judgement, no?

Not that most of our... Passengers seem dissuaded from engaging in such activities at any other time.

Enforcement will be the difficult part. But we'll see what shakes out, if you're interested. I should rattle Lark's tree, see if we can get us all on the same page.

I can't say I'm familiar with this 'Lark', but by all means, feel free.

'Tis better that residents have goals to strive for than feel embittered by the squandering of their skills.

I agree. It was very frustrating as an inmate, to 'earn' my right to use my skill set.... I did it -- [ He reaches off screen to ruffle Angus's ears ] but... still.

Indeed... We should be teaching healthy applications of talents, not denying them. 'Tis a most unnatural state.
